The Majestic x Spicewalla: A New Chinese Five Spice Collaboration
Two Asheville culinary brands are joining forces on something you can take home.
The Majestic, the new Chinese American restaurant from the Scheffer Group, has teamed up with Asheville-born spice company Spicewalla on a custom Chinese Five Spice blend, available now.
Created as an ongoing collaboration between the two brands, the blend gives home cooks a way to bring some of the flavors and inspiration behind The Majestic into their own kitchens.
“I was really excited to work with an Asheville-born culinary innovator like Spicewalla,” said Eric Scheffer, founder and CEO of the Scheffer Group. “Especially in more challenging economic times, I think it’s important for independent businesses to find ways to support one another and keep our community strong. This collaboration is a great example of that Asheville spirit, bringing two local brands together and giving people a way to experience a little bit of the Majestic beyond the restaurant.”
The Majestic is the latest concept from longtime hospitality veterans Scheffer Group, celebrating the dishes, flavors and nostalgia of Chinese American dining from Scheffer’s New York City childhood. Helmed by Executive Chef Kaya Rehnberg, the restaurant offers a neighborhood counter-service experience on Merrimon Avenue.
Rehnberg also sees plenty of ways to use five-spice beyond the dishes it might first bring to mind.
“Every five-spice blend is a little different, and that’s part of what makes it so interesting,” said Rehnberg. “Five-spice has deep roots in Chinese cuisine and is a staple in so many dishes, especially with pork. But I also love using it in baking. It’s fantastic in ginger snaps, gingerbread, and other warm, spiced desserts because it adds this subtle savory depth and a little kick.”
The Majestic x Spicewalla Chinese Five Spice retails for $14.99 and is available at The Majestic at 321 Merrimon Avenue, Spicewalla’s shop in Asheville’s Grove Arcade and online through The Majestic.
